As a Calibre Insurance Development Manager, a typical work day sees Chris Yates meet with brokers to help them achieve good insurance outcomes for their clients.
Whether he is setting up a scheme, transferring a portfolio or assisting with a policy renewal, Chris thrives on delivering effective solutions for clients.
Chris, who has more than 10 years experience in the Australian insurance industry, has certainly come a long way from his days at university when he detailed cars to earn extra money. Having abandoned the mantra of ‘wax-on, wax-off’, he now spends his time making sure Calibre’s brokers are fully supported.
In this interview, Chris tells us about his role as a Development Manager.
How did you get into insurance and become a Development Manager?
I started my current role after spending 12 years in insurance broking. Since entering the industry, I always wanted to become a Development Manager. I quickly developed a passion for the industry and realised the value add a Development Manager can offer to a broker in helping find solutions together. It has proved to be a fantastic experience.
What qualities does a good Development Manager need?
A good Development Manager needs resilience, an ability to problem solve, empathy and a positive attitude.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy meeting new people and building strong relationships with brokers. I have been privileged to meet some truly inspiring people through my role, such as brokers that started from humble beginnings and managed to grow their business into a market leader.
What do you think “Good Insurance” is?
I believe that Good Insurance is informed insurance and shouldn’t end with the claim settlement. Good Insurance is straightforward and fair. The insurance market is forever changing and I personally think that Good Insurance should be a constant. It is a ‘team effort’ and involves the insured, the broker and insurer. We’re all in this together!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends, going to the gym, watching movies and travelling.
How would your friends describe you?
Down to earth, fair, hardworking, resourceful and dependable.
What is the most unusual situation you have encountered in your role?
In my first few weeks at Calibre Insurance, I was among a group of people who sang happy birthday to a broker’s pet pug dog. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
How do you keep a good work/life balance?
I find that spending time with my new wife keeps me level headed as does enjoying the company of family and friends. Exercise also helps me to stay balanced.
What do you like most about working at Calibre Insurance?
I like the fact that we are nimble and able to adapt to Australia’s ever-changing insurance landscape. I also like the fact that Calibre Insurance fosters a great team culture.
