According to Melissa – who has more than 25 years of experience in the Australian insurance industry – it keeps the job interesting, which helps her achieve consistently good outcomes for Brokers and Policyholders.
In this interview, Melissa shares some of the secrets to her success at Calibre Insurance.
How did you get into insurance and become a Development Manager?
Like many others, I initially ‘fell into’ the insurance industry but quickly developed a passion for it. I enjoy meeting people and building relationships, so my role as a Development Manager is a natural fit for me.
What qualities does a good Development Manager need?
A good Development Manager needs to be approachable, reliable, honest and fair. Being self-motivated and highly organised are also must-have qualities.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy making a difference. I know I’ve had a good day when I can help a Broker secure a desirable outcome for their client, or make a procedural change that helps make doing business with us more straightforward.
What is the hardest thing you have had to do in your role?
Visiting clients in Toowoomba who suffered personal and material losses in the 2011 Queensland floods. It was very difficult, but also rewarding to be able to provide much needed help on their path to recovery.
What do you think “Good Insurance” is?
For me, Good Insurance is summed up by the collaboration that happens between the policyholder, their Broker and the insurer in times of difficulty. When that happens, it’s amazing what we can achieve together.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
What can I say, I love coffee and I love cars; especially red ones as they go faster. All my cars are red and one of my favourite past times is going on long mountain drives in my exotic red car. I also enjoy fishing and camping on the weekends with my family.
How would your friends describe you?
Above all, they would describe me as resilient. I believe challenges shape who we are and that we can learn from both negative and positive experiences in life.
What have you done that no-one would guess you’d done?
I won the hoola-hoop competition at my daughter’s disco.
How do you keep a good work/life balance?
I take one week of annual leave every school holidays to make sure I spend quality time with my family.
What do you like most about working at Calibre Insurance?
I appreciate the culture of unity at Calibre Insurance. Even though I work remotely we work well as a team and I enjoy the feeling of togetherness that this inspires.
